Elmhurst's Curran named CCIW Wrestler of the Week

Elmhurst's Charlie Curran was named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Wrestler of the Week Tuesday.

Curran, a senior from Arlington Heights, Ill., and Hersey High School, won the title at 157 pounds, posting a 5-0 record during the Concordia (Wis.) Open on Saturday. He was also voted "Outstanding Wrestler" as he beat two-time all-American Jesse Milks from Wisconsin-Platteville, 5-2, in the semifinals. He picked up a 5-3 victory over Cade Sarbecker from Wisconsin-Whitewater in the finals. Curran is a Special Education major.

Wheaton's Jurgens, Illinois Wesleyan's Gilbert named CCIW Swimmers of the Week

Wheaton's Lauren Jurgens and Illinois Wesleyan's Tommy Gilbert were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimmers of the Week Tuesday.

Jurgens, a sophomore from Decatur, Ill., and St. Teresa High School, won the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Wabash Invite over the weekend, finishing with a time of 17:33.88. Her time was 10 seconds faster than her winning time at the 2009 CCIW Championship, and it earned her an NCAA B cut in that event. Jurgens is a Biology major.

Gilbert, a sophomore from Northbrook, Ill., and Glenbrook North High School, won the 200-yard IM with an un-tapered best time of 2:03.92 at the IWU Invitational on Saturday. He also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.21), and had an un-tapered best in his 50-yard freestyle split (22.75) on the 200-yard freestyle relay. Gilbert is a History major.

North Central’s Errico named CCIW Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- North Central’s Jackie Errico was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday.

Errico, a junior forward from Blue Island, Ill., and Marian Catholic High School, averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in North Central’s first two games of the season at the NCC/Holiday Inn Express Tip-Off Tournament. She scored 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had four steals in a 70-68 win over Blackburn in the opening round on Friday. She then turned in 21 points and seven rebounds in a 95-71 loss to Simpson on Saturday. For the week, Errico shot 50 percent (five-of-10) from three-point range and was the only Cardinal to score in double figures in both games. Errico is an Exercise Science major.

Wheaton’s McCrary named CCIW Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Wheaton’s Tim McCrary was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday.

McCrary, a sophomore forward from Wilmette, Ill., and New Trier High School, helped lead Wheaton to a pair of victories and the tournament title at its own Lee Pfund Classic over the weekend. McCrary was named the Will Landry Memorial Tournament MVP as he averaged 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds while shooting 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the field in the two games. He pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and scored 10 points in a 54-39 win over Trine on Friday. On Saturday, he scored 29 points, pulled down six rebounds, and tallied three assists and three steals in leading the Thunder to an 88-72 victory against McMurry. McCrary is a double major in Business & Economics and Christian Formation & Ministry.

Wheaton's Tomal named CCIW Wrestler of the Week

Wheaton's Justin Tomal was named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Wrestler of the Week Tuesday.

Tomal, a senior from Wheaton, Ill., and Wheaton-Warrenville South High School, won the 174-pound weight class at the Knox College Invitational on Saturday. Tomal finished 4-0 on the day including a 3-1 victory in the championship match against Wisconsin-Platteville's Cory Zurberbier. Tomal is a Psychology major, but is on a Pre-Med track.

Augustana's Vens, Illinois Wesleyan's Peterson and Kozak named CCIW Swimmers of the Week

Augustana's Ramsey Vens and Illinois Wesleyan's Andrea Peterson and Michael Kozak were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimmers of the Week Tuesday.

Vens, a senior from Bettendorf, Iowa and Pleasant Valley High School, won both the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes in a dual meet with Grinnell on Saturday. Vens won the 100 with a time of 1:03.36 and the 200 with a time of 2:19.00. She is a Communication major.

Peterson, a sophomore from Homewood, Ill., and Homewood-Flossmoor High School, won the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke in a dual meet with Carthage on Saturday. Her 200 time of 2:12.80 was an un-tapered best by over a second, while her 100 backstroke time of 1:00.81 was also an un-tapered best by over a second and was faster than her time in prelims at last season's CCIW meet. She also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.56. Peterson is a Psychology major.

Kozak, a senior from Aurora, Ill., and Waubonsie Valley High School, had two first place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard butterfly during a dual meet with Carthage on Saturday. He finished with a time of 51.84 in the 100, which was an un-tapered best by 0.6 seconds. His 200 time of 1:55.60 was 1.5 seconds faster than his previous un-tapered best. Kozak also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with an un-tapered best time of 49.32. He is a History major.

Lee, Charles, Antonacci named CCIW Football Players of the Week

Augustana’s David Lee, along with North Central’s Stewart Charles and Joe Antonacci were named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week Monday.

Lee, a sophomore quarterback from Springfield, Ill., and Springfield High School, completed 25 of 34 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns as Augustana defeated Millikin 42-13 on Saturday. Lee also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the game as he helped the Vikings finish the season with a 6-4 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the CCIW. For the second week in a row, Lee supplanted former NFL MVP Ken Anderson in the school’s record book. After breaking Anderson’s single-game record for completions last week, Lee’s 422 passing yards broke the previous record of 410, set by Anderson against North Park on November 2, 1968.

Charles, a sophomore defensive back from Batavia, Ill., and Batavia High School, posted a career-high 11 tackles (10 solo) in a 49-24 win over Elmhurst on Saturday that clinched a share of the CCIW title for North Central. He also finished with two tackles for loss, one quarterback sack, and broke up three passes en route to the victory. Charles is an Economics major.

Antonacci, a sophomore wide receiver from Naperville, Ill., and Neuqua Valley High School, finished with 180 return yards in North Central’s win over Elmhurst, returning five punts for 65 yards (13.0 yards per return) and two kickoffs for 115 yards. Antonacci returned a first-quarter kickoff 81 yards to the Bluejays’ 16-yard line, leading to a North Central score on the next play. He is a Finance major.
